B.L.H. Perera — A Legend in Olympic Education in Sri Lanka: A Note from My Heart…

Another countable proud moment for Sri Lanka in Sports is by Mr. B. Laven. H. Perera who is awarded “150 Years, Pierre de Coubertin, Sport as a School of Life” award by the International Olympic Committee for his outstanding contribution in the field of Sport Education. He has contributed in the Sports field from his young age. Later, his contribution in the development of Sport in Sri Lanka is immense and especially his movement is in the Sport Education track.

Forever Life Time Achiever….

It is very rare to find a person who did sports and becoming an educated person in the field of sport in Sri Lanka. B.L.H. Perera is one of the few examples in Sri Lanka. He had started his sports journey from his very early young age as an athlete who was the champion for many years in Athletics, especially in the events of throwing. A great foundation of his sportsmanship brought him today at this level and taught us so many lessons too.

As an outstanding student shined both in sports and in academic careers, B.L.H became a teacher and by his active work, dedication and commitment he was promoted as the Director of Physical Education of University of Kelaniya. Later, he became a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education of University of Kelaniya by his fascination in the field of Sport Education. By his inspirational lectures, approachable manner and kind words, he is living in every student’s heart. During the time, he worked with students in many publications and case studies in the field of Sport Management as well. For his immense services to the University, he was presented “Life Time Award” by the Sri Lanka University Sports Association in 2014.

Friendly B.L.H never hesitates to share his knowledge with anyone. Also, he has been a motivator to the students and inspired and has driven his students on their path towards many successes by his greatest experience and knowledge. The pioneer of Sport Education in Sri Lanka — B.L.H has worked at various levels of administrations such as schools, institutions, universities, National Federations, National Sports Council and in many other organizations as a teacher, lecturer, director and consultant. It is praiseworthy to mention that he had served as a Director of National Institute of Sports Science as well. I wholeheartedly appreciate B.L.H and his hard works for more than the last three decades in the development of sports in Sri Lanka and bring up the next generation in to the Sport Education.

Sport as a School of Life…

The legend in the field of Sport Education has been working as a Director for academic programmes at the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOC Sri Lanka) for the last thirty years. He also has produced many young administrators by his tireless job in the academy field at NOC Sri Lanka. Finally International Olympic Committee honored him by awarding “150 Years, Pierre de Coubertin, Sport as a School of Life” in 2015. Many of the people in Sri Lanka do not know him, but the services he rendered in sport development and achievements should be admired by the Lankan sport actors.

Finally, he is the soul of Sport Education in Sri Lanka and he has made all of us proud in Sri Lanka.

Today 30 October 2016: It’s been more than TWO Decades… — A True Story

We fell asleep after a tired day of shopping for Diwali in 1995. How could this 10 Year-old child have planned to celebrate Diwali with his family, relatives and friends. I was counting the hours and fallen asleep myself. On the other side, a poor cock was sleeping on the hay in a half barrel without knowing anything about its end gonna be soon. Just before some hours to Diwali, there were crackers, I was awaken. Oh Noooo…. They were not crackers… they are artillery BOMBS… falling around our home. Parents hold our hands and ran away towards nearby home. Very fortunately, nothing was fallen on our house. Then we came back after some hours and I was just sitting and shivering inside the bathroom (for safety) until the morning.

During this, we could hear someone was running behind our home. As we were frozen by dead-fear, no one moved out the home. Next day morning only we got to know that someone has stolen the cock. Disappointed for Diwali…! Could not stay anymore in our home as the bloody war was so close to our area. We just wore the new dresses and left home with tears and with what we could take by our small hands.

On 30 October 1995, A ‘Walk for life’ started and we walked overnight more than 25 km. It took around seven hours to reach Chavachcheri from Jaffna town. No one could even ride bicycle, just walking under the pouring rain through the massive crowd. There is a Pillyar Temple at Kaithady, we were told by our parents that whoever passes the temple should stop and have a prayers; else, something might happen badly. But, my dad who was carrying mom and brother in his bicycle with big luggages passed the temple without stopping there. I took my sister in my small bicycle and as she has known well about that temple matter, she jumped off and disappeared as there was a massive crowd around the temple. Omg… what can I do…? Dad was going 80 meters far in the front… I chased him and told him that my sister is missed in the crowd while we passed the temple. We were searching everywhere in the crowd at dawn. Finally she was behind the temple with tears.

How many disappointments, fears and tears in our childhood. We are still living in this world towards are goals. Amazing Creatures!!!

Thanjai Periya Kovil — A Historical Treasure! — தஞ்சைப் பெருவுடையார் கோயில் ஒரு வரலாற்று பொக்கிசம்!

‘Brihadeeswara Kovil’ is not a Tamil name at all, but it is a Sanskrit name. How did the Tamil Kovil get a Sanskrit name? Briha means மிகப்பெரிய — Mihapperiya (huge) and Eswara means God Sivan. It was named so when Maratha Kings ruled Thanjai during 17th-18th Centuries. But, the real name of the Thanjai Periya Kovil is Thanjai Peruvudaiyar Kovil (தஞ்சைப் பெருவுடையார் கோயில்). Not only the name alone Tamil, This is a fully Tamil Kovil. You will be wondered if you hear the true story.

The height of the Lingam in the sanctum of the temple is 12 feet which is equal to the number of Tamil vowels. The height of the Linga pedestal is 18 feet which is equal to the number of Tamil consonants. The height of the Temple Gopuram is 216 feet which is equal to the number of Consonantal-vowels. The distance between the Lingam in the sanctum of the temple and the Nandi (Bull) is 247 feet which is equal to the total number of Tamil characters.

5000 elephants were used for this Temple construction. It took 30 years for the completion of the construction and all the workers’ names, the prime sculptor to water boy, are carved on the stones. It took five years to take an 80000 Kg stone from the floor to the top of the temple. This temple is fully constructed with the balance to the gravity of the Earth. Only one stone is used to make the Nandi of the temple and it is the second largest in India. This temple is made up of grenade stones, but there is no grenade stone to be found within the surrounding 60km of the temple. It is still a wonder how it was possible. Archeologists found many figures reflected foreign people and kings inside the temple. It reveals that King Raja Raja Chola had a strong relationship with many foreign kings. Every Tamil should visit Thanjai Peruvudaiyar Kovil. Let’s walk around the temple once in our life where King Raja Raja Chola walked.

UNESCO declared Thanjai Peruvudaiyar Kovil as a world heritage (1987). Why was the temple not proposed to the ‘Wonders of the World’ List? India proposed Taj Mahal to the Wonders of the World List. Why India did not propose Thanjai Peruvudaiyar Kovil which is 1000 times worthier than of Taj Mahal. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is also in the Wonders of the World list which began to tilt during construction. While a worse construction was added to the List, why Thanjai Peruvudaiyar Kovil, which is standing without even any small breakage over 1000 years, is not announced as the Wonder of the World?

Sport Has the Power to Unite Countries; PyeongChang 2018 Did It — Lee, President of POCOG

SEOUL — PyeongChang 2018 proved a successful and peaceful Winter Olympic Games, promoting regional development and prospects for Korean unification, LEE Hee-beom, President of POCOG, said Wednesday.

Speaking to a group of graduate students at Seoul National University, LEE said, “PyeongChang showed the power of sports.”

The PyeongChang Olympics ran from Feb. 9–25. Some 2920 athletes from 92 national Olympic committees participated in 102 events — all Games records. More: 25 Olympic records and three world records were broken.

In the lead-up the Games, North Korea had launched 11 missiles over the Pacific Ocean. Some countries were expressing concern over attending the 2018 Games, Lee said. Then, though, North and South Korea marched together in the opening ceremony and players from both nations played in a joint women’s ice-hockey team. Later, Lee said, PyeongChang was called the safest Olympic ever in the history.

In all, Lee said, the Games cost $14 billion. Of that, $12 billion went to infrastructure, including a high-speed rail line, expressways, roads and venues. The arena used for the opening and closing ceremony will be demolished, Lee said.

POCOG, which last year was in the red, now anticipates a surplus, he said, with Olympic ticket sales — among other revenue items — at 100.9 percent.

The Games boosted South Korean GDP by 0.2 percent, he said.

Lee said more than seven million students benefitted from PyeongChang education program. He said six countries, including Nigeria and other warm-weather nations, appeared at the Winter Olympics for the very first time. Newly introduced 5G technology made PyeongChang the most high-tech Olympics in the history, he said.

The Games, he said, have gotten good reviews from the likes of Thomas Bach, the IOC president, and Sheikh Ahmad, the ANOC president.

ஆற்றொனாக் காயங்களுடன்…

யுத்தத்தின் இறுதி மாத காலத்தில் தமிழீழ விடுதலைப்புலிகள் மீதான இராணுவத்தின் குண்டுத்தாக்குதலின் போது அத்தாக்குதல் பொது மக்களையும் கொடூரமாகத்தாக்கியது. அலப்போ மற்றும் மொசூலில் நடந்தது போல பலர் கிளர்ச்சிக் குழுக்களின் பிரதேசங்களுக்குள்ளும் இருந்தனர். இன்று ஒரு சமாதானச் சூழல் காணப்படுகிறது; ஆனால் இலங்கையின் 26 வருடகால யுத்தத்தின் வலிமாறக் காயங்கள் இன்னமும் சமாதானம் எனும் போர்வையால் மூடி மறைக்கப்பட்டு நசுக்கப்பட்டுதான் இருக்கிறது.

கலைஞன் சிவா கஜா அவர்கள் நத்தையானது அதனுடைய முதுகின் மேல் எவ்வாறாக தன்னுடைய நத்தைமேலோட்டினைக் காவிச் செல்கின்றதோ அவ்வாறாக யுத்தத்தின் ஆறாத்துயருடன் அவற்றைச் சித்திரமாக வடிவமைத்துவருகிறார். இலங்கையினுடைய வடக்கின் சுத்தந்திரத்துக்காகப் போராடிய குழுவான தமிழ்ப் புலிகளுக்கும் (தமிழீழ விடுதலைப் புலிகள், த.வி.பு) இலங்கை அரசுக்கும் இடையில் 1983 ஆம் ஆண்டிலிருந்து யுத்தம் முடிவுக்கு வரும் வரையும் பொதுமக்கள் பலவந்தமாக வெளியேற்றப்பட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். “இது நத்தையை போலவே, தங்களுடைய முதுகுகளிலே தங்களுடைய பாரச்சுமைகளை சுமந்துகொண்டு சென்ற எம்மினத்தை நான் யுத்தத்தின் இறுதி காலகட்ட மாதங்களில் நன்றாகவே பார்த்தும் அனுபவித்தும் இருக்கிறேன்” இவ்வாறாக சிவா கஜா அவர்கள் கூறிக்கொண்டார்.

வடக்கு இலங்கையினுடைய தலைநகரமாக இருக்கின்ற யாழ்ப்பாண மாவட்டத்தின் ஒரு புறநகர் பகுதியில் வாடகைக்கு அமர்ந்திருக்கின்ற சிவா கஜா அந்த வீட்டினுடைய உள் முற்றத்தில் அமைதியாக அமர்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார். மென்மையான பஞ்சு முகில் சட்டென மழையாகப் பொழிகிறது, அந்த வெளி முற்றம் முழுவதும் நீரில் மூழ்குகிறது. நாங்கள் சற்றே கதிரைகளை தாழ்வாரத்துக்குள் நகர்த்திக்கொண்டு தொடர்ந்து பேசிகிக்கொண்டேயிருக்கிறோம்.

எட்டு வருடங்களின் முன்னர், எல்லாவற்றையும் இழந்து எடுக்க முடிந்ததை மட்டும் எடுத்துக்கொண்டு அந்த நத்தைகளில் ஒருவனாக — சிவா கஜா. அது முல்லைத்தீவு பிரதேசமாக இருந்தது — அனைத்தும் முடிந்து விட்ட இலங்கையின் வட-கிழக்கிலிருந்து தமிழர்களின் நகரங்களும் கிராமங்களும் இருக்கின்ற ஒரு நெடுங்கடற்கரைப் பிரதேசமாகும். அங்கே தான் சிவா கஜா வசித்துவந்தான். அத்துடன் அரசாங்கத்தின் குண்டுகளால் பலவந்தமாகத் தப்பி ஓடும்படி பணிக்கப்பட்டு கலைக்கப்பட்ட தமிழ் புலிகளின் பிரதேசமாகவும் பல சிவிலியன்கள் வாழ்ந்த பகுதியாகவும் அது இருந்தது. இறுதில், எல்லோரும் ஒன்றாக சேர்ந்ததும் முல்லைத்தீவின் ஒரு சிறிய கடற்கரைத் துண்டுக்குள் சிறைப்பிடிக்கப்பட்டனர்.

சிவா கஜா யுத்தத்தில் அவன் அவனுடைய மூத்த சகோதரியை இழந்தான்; நான்கு மாதங்கள் கழித்து அவனுடைய அம்மா மற்றும் இளைய சகோதரி இருவரையும் 2004 ஆம் ஆண்டு எதிர்பாராது உலுக்கிய ஆழி பேரனர்த்தமாம் சுனாமி காவுகொண்டுகொண்டது. இன்று அவனது அப்பாவும் இரு சகோதரர்களுமே எஞ்சியிருக்கிறார்கள். இந்த கொடிய யுத்தத்தின் பின்னராக அவன் அவனுடைய சகோதரிகளையும், அம்மாவையும், தன்னுடைய சுய உருவப்படத்தையும், துப்பாக்கிகளாலும் குண்டுகளாலும் பொறிவைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள உலகத்தையும் சித்தரிக்க ஆரம்பித்தான்.

‘எனக்கு என்னுடைய சகோதரி எப்படி இருக்கிறாள் என்று தெரியவில்லை எனவே, நான் அவளின் வெறுமையான உருவப்படத்தை மட்டுமே வரைகிறேன். எல்லாமே யுத்தத்தினால் காணாமல் போய்விட்டது; எனவே, என்னிடம் அவளின் புகைப்படம் ஒன்றுமே இல்லை; அத்துடன் நான் இனி அவளைப் பார்க்கப்போவதும் இல்லை. சில வேளைகளில் நான் சிந்திப்பது என்னவெனில் அவள் இன்னமும் உயிருடன் இருப்பதாகவும் அவள் ஒரு இலங்கை இராணுவவீரனை மணம் செய்து இருக்கிறாள் என்றும் — இலங்கை இராணுவம் இறுதி யுத்தத்தின் போது பல பெண்களை எடுத்துச் சென்றது. அது தான் நான் அவளை ஒரு இராணுவ அங்கியில் சித்தரிக்கிறேன்.’ — சிவா கஜா

‘நான் நந்திக்கடலை கூட வரைகின்றேன், அந்த நீர்ப்பரப்பிலே இறுதியாக பல உயிர்கள் காவுகொள்ளப்பட்டன. நான் எல்லா மிருகங்களையும் மீன்களையும் வரைகின்றேன். அவைகள் கூட யுத்தத்தினால் மிகவும் அவதியுற்றன. அனால் அவற்றின் வலியைச் சொல்வதற்கு எந்த மொழியும் இருக்கவில்லை. நீங்கள் என்னிடம் யுத்தகாலப்பகுதிகளில் என்ன செய்தீர்கள்? எங்கே போனீர்கள்? என்றெல்லாம் கேட்டால் என்னால் அவற்றையெல்லாம் தெளிவாக கூறமுடியாது. ஏனெனில் எங்களுக்கே தெரியாது நங்கள் எங்கே போய்க்கொண்டிருந்தோம் என்று, எல்லாரும் ‘அங்க போ’, ‘இங்க வா’ என்று கத்தி கூச்சலிட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தனர். பலர் இலங்கை இராணுவமும் தமிழ்ப்புலிகளும் என்னை என்ன நடந்தது என்று கூட பலவந்தப்படுத்திக் கேட்டனர். இறுதிக் கட்டத்தில் நான் புலிகளில் ஒருவன் போல உடையணிந்திருந்தேன். அவர்கள் என்னை ஆட்சேர்ப்பதில் முயற்சித்தனர். எனவே, நான் அவர்களில் ஒருவன் போல பாசாங்குபண்ணிக்கூடவிருந்தேன்.’ — சிவா கஜா

சிவா கஜா மூன்று இலட்சத்துக்கு மேலான மக்கள் இடம்பெயர்ந்த போது இறுதிக்கட்டத்தில் என்ன நடந்தது என்ற சில ஞாபகங்களை மீண்டும் மீண்டும் சித்தரித்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறான். அவன் எப்பொழுதுமே யுத்தத்தின் இறுதியில் அவர்கள் சிறைபிடிக்கப்பட்டிருந்த ஞாபகங்களையும் அந்த சிறிய மணற்படுக்கை இடத்தையும் அடிக்கடி சித்தரிக்கிறான்.
